YellowBubble.org Beta Testing Approaches, and a CONTEST!!!
Category yellowbubble
It's been a couple of weeks since I have posted here on my blog as I have concentrated on the XPages Blog over at XPagesBlog.com. But that hasn't slowed the development of YellowBubble.org at all! I've got the first phase all coded and designed out, and am just working through making sure the experience is A grade amongst all supported browsers.
With that, I thought I'd give you a few more detailed screen shots (found at the end of this post), and let you know that we are going to be entering "managed beta" here in the next week or so. I'll be sending out an email to those who have raised their hand that they are interested in testing, etc with the beta URL to get in and try it out. This first round is going to be product/solution "providers" only, not product/solution "consumers" ... they will be included as part of the overall beta release to follow soon after. If you haven't let me know already if you want in on the testing, leave a comment below (be sure to leave your email address).

Also, there has been a lot of controversy and hub-bub around the lotus online community lately, with a lot of use of the "yellow bubble" in a negative context .. I originally didn't have a problem with it, and thought the positive of the site could outweigh the negative the term has gotten in the past. Now I'm not so sure, SO ... I am going to have a contest to come up with a new name for YellowBubble.org .... the name needs to be easy to remember, catchy, and relevant to the site itself. Post your ideas in the comments below, and we'll see if we get a winner. I'll do another post later with the options and a vote, then I'll pick the winner. Just to be upfront, its not going to be strictly a popularity contest, The name has to "work" for me, so I'll be the final judge on the name, but popular opinion will have a major impact. The winner will get attribution on the site, and maybe some other small prize I haven't quite come up with yet.
Ok, here's the goods, some more teaser screen shots ...
The "Provider Catalog"
The Product Catalog
Sample Listing out of the Provider Catalog
Part of the Provider Dashboard
A Sample of a Provider's Public Profile
A Listing from a Provider's Product Portfolio
A Product Profile from a Provider's Portfolio
Provider's "Manage My Portfolio" and product statistics
Provider's Marketing Profile setup

This site is going to grow and build upon itself iteratively over time, today we start with simple catalogs and profiles, but that is just the base upon which everything else is built. I want to integrate into the site the ability to source work with providers, like elance for example. I want to build in an NTF App Store, where you can list and sell your products. I am working to build a "next generation" technical resource aggregator that gives you one central location to interact with many different resources (not just search, or a wiki, or social bookmarking, etc, but actively engage in a unique way that I really don't see happening out there yet) ... and more.
But the key is, as you said it, attracting new customers, and new potential revenue sources to the YellowBubble.org community so you, the BP, have a chance to actually engage them. That's one of the reasons, for example, to build the technical resource aggregator, to have a piece of technology that drives customers to come. I have other ideas to do this as well, but it all comes down to making the site viral in some way, so that YellowBubble.org becomes an invaluable resource to those who can use your services as a BP, and can engage you.
But most importantly, it will be different because I want this to be a community resource, something the community builds upon, and takes under its wing. I know that its not going to just happen. I have to get in there and make it work and get the wheels greased and moving and prove value before the community will really even consider stepping in. But if I can do that, and the community can step in, and this can take off, and we can all get behind pushing and broadcasting the YB name, then the sum of the all the parts of the community pushing to bring those customers to YB will be greater than any one BP can do on their own. It will give you the chance to fight for a piece of a much bigger pie.
Maybe I'm just a dreamer, but I know what I can do, and I know what this site can be, and I know what it can do for me, and for the community, so I am going to make it happen to the best of my, and hopefully at some point, the communities ability. Don't get me wrong, this isn't some heavenly altruistic giving of self moment that I am having. I am looking to make this site a success, because I have a vested interest as a BP myself to have a resource like this.

I see you will provide stats on the site, which is an improvement over other sites of this nature for my benefit as a BP.
As a BP, I know there are many different sites that do this, aside from IBM, and I am still pondering why this one is needed or different from the others. Or is this just "another advertising outlet"?
Don't get me wrong, most of the others have failed, so what is this one about that will draw unknown clients to it?
Maybe when I see it and try it out I will have a different view but you can imagine my wariness of yet another site to maintain.
